How to buy vintage and collectible toys on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Mercari and Whatnot without getting burned. Ten rules we follow ourselves every time we hunt.
The rules
1. Pay the protected way. Every time.
Buyer protection only works when the money moves through the platform. Once you pay outside it, you're on your own.
- Do: Pay through eBay checkout, Facebook checkout with shipping, Mercari, Whatnot, or PayPal Goods & Services.
- Don't: Use Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal Friends & Family, gift cards or wire transfers with a stranger. That money is gone.
2. Keep the chat on the app
If a seller wants to move to text, email or WhatsApp, that's the first sign of a scam. Messages on the platform are your proof if something goes wrong.
- Never send a verification code someone texts you. That's how accounts get stolen.
- Don't click payment links or scan QR codes a seller sends you.
3. Check the seller before the toy
- Feedback: look at the number and the recent reviews, not just the percentage.
- Account age: a brand-new account selling rare stuff cheap is a red flag.
- Other listings: a real collector's other listings make sense together. A scammer's are random.
4. Ask for your own photo
Stock photos and blurry pictures hide problems. Ask for a photo of the item next to a note with your name and today's date. Real sellers do it in a minute. Scammers disappear.
- Ask for the angles that matter: box corners, card bubbles, joints, feet stamps, battery door.
- Unsure? Run the photo through a reverse image search. Stolen photos turn up fast.
5. Know the real price
Asking prices mean nothing. What matters is what the item actually sold for. On eBay, search the item, then filter by Sold items. Check the last 5 to 10 sales in the same condition.
If it's half the going rate, ask yourself why before you ask how fast you can pay.
6. Learn the fakes for what you collect
Every line has its knockoffs. A few to watch for:
- Vintage Star Wars: reproduction weapons and accessories, and resealed cards. Look for yellowing that doesn't match and glue marks around the bubble.
- G1 Transformers: knockoffs with off colors, cheap plastic and missing or fake rubsigns on 1985 and later figures.
- Funko Pop!: fonts, box printing and the stamp under the foot that don't match a real one.
- Loose figures: "complete" with reproduction parts. Ask if accessories are original.
7. Ask the questions photos can't answer
- Smoke or musty smell? It's almost impossible to get out.
- Sun fading or yellowed plastic?
- Loose limbs, broken joints, stress marks?
- For anything with batteries: have you opened the battery door? Any corrosion?
8. Meeting local? Play it safe.
- Meet in daylight in a busy public place. Many police stations have safe exchange zones.
- Bring a friend. Tell someone where you're going.
- Inspect it fully before you hand over cash. Bring batteries to test electronics.
- Local cash deals have no buyer protection. Once you walk away, it's done.
9. Shipping: tracked, insured, packed right
- Always get a tracking number.
- For anything pricey, ask the seller to add insurance.
- Sealed and boxed items should ship box-in-box. Ask how it'll be packed.
10. Film the unboxing. Check it right away.
Record yourself opening the package, start to finish. If something's wrong, that video makes your claim easy. Inspect everything the day it arrives, because claim windows are short.
On Mercari, don't rate the seller until you've checked the item. Rating it releases your money to the seller.
Red flags: walk away if you see
- A price way below recent sold listings
- "Pay now, lots of people want it"
- Asks for a deposit to "hold" it
- Wants payment by Zelle, gift card or Friends & Family
- Wants to move the chat off the app
- Brand-new account, no feedback, rare items
- Stock photos or won't send new ones
- Local listing, but "can only ship"
- Sends you a link or QR code to pay
- Asks you for a code sent to your phone
Platform cheat sheet
| Platform | How you're protected | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| eBay | Money Back Guarantee when you pay through eBay checkout. Open a claim if the item doesn't arrive or isn't as described. | Sellers asking to finish the deal off eBay. |
| Facebook Marketplace | Purchase Protection only on items bought with Facebook checkout and shipping. | Local cash deals and outside payment apps have no protection. |
| Mercari | Money is held until you rate the seller. | Don't rate until you've inspected the item. Report problems before rating. |
| Whatnot | Buyer protection on purchases made in the app. | Live auctions move fast. Set your max bid before the stream starts. |
| Craigslist / local | None. Cash in person only. | Follow the local meetup rules above. |
Platform rules change. Check each site's current buyer protection page before a big purchase.
